The Global Crisis of Waste: A World in Peril

Every year, we dispose of a staggering 2.12 billion tons of waste. If all this waste were loaded onto trucks, they could encircle the globe 24 times. This astonishing quantity of waste is largely because 99 percent of the items we purchase are discarded within 6 months.

How much carbon is generated during product production and transportation? Why do we find ourselves repeatedly buying the same products? Everyone is engrossed in marketing and advertisements, but who will prioritize product quality for the customers?

The Global Threat:

Dumping Waste Endangers People Worldwide

Toxic and hazardous wastes are frequently exported to developing countries, a practice commonly referred to as the global waste trade. In a specific incident, 4,000 tons of toxic waste were deceitfully labeled as “fertilizers” and shipped to Nigeria. Among the waste were 150 tons of highly toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are known to cause hormone deficiencies and impair cognitive development in children.

The dumpsites resulting from the global waste trade share a common characteristic: they pose significant threats to human health and the environment in the affected communities. Approximately 64 million people are directly impacted by dumpsites created through the global waste trade.
